" Hailing from the south coast of England, producer, DJ, turntable musician, cassette looper and artist, RIVAL SELF has been well known within hip hop circles since the mid 90s.
20th of October sees the highly anticipated release of his self titled debut LP — a meticulously detailed field trip through an immersive soundscape that encapsulates the spirit of early Shadow for the art loving crate digger.
Heavily influenced by his love of psychedelia and the spirit of jazz, he has crafted a deeply personal sonic documentation of change.
“Take a peek into the weird & wonderful mind of a ‘60s-obsessed, introverted turntablist who has accidentally created his own sub-genre of instrumental hip hop.”

I was having a real rough time of life, at the time that this dropped. I wasn't dieing or anything. But we all have bad times, you know? I had (still do have) a lot of time for these two gents. As soon as I gave the album a whirl, I got back a bit of the energy I had when someone first put me onto Music for the Mature B-Boy, many moons back by then. The record genuinely helped me get through a rough time, and I'll always owe Abs and Format a beer for that.
Cheers for that, dudes. laser_owl
